about

Laughing Lamb is my solo project and I am Pete Smith (drummer with LUCY LEAVE). The project has developed out my passion for playing primitive-style guitar which was focussed after Mike (of LUCY LEAVE) bought me a JOHN FAHEY transcription book for Christmas in 2017. Shortly before, I had watched a youtube interview with John who declared that his favourite guitar player couldn’t afford a guitar, so instead he just drummed on the street. I decided that I could flip this and develop into a better drummer by practising guitar. This has several benefits including saving the cost of practise space and not having to haul a drum kit.

I am releasing my first EP called BANG on Friday the 12th of October which has 10 tracks. The EP was recorded from the 3rd of September to the morning of the 18th of September and mixing happened slowly but was completed during the early hours of the 8th October. All recording, mixing and mastering was completed by me in my east Oxford attic room where I can’t stand up without BANGING my head. The EP includes guitars, hand percussion, synth and fretless bass (my favourite instrument). The singing, where it occurs, closely follows a single line of guitar melody - a technique copied from DAVID GRUBBS from GASTR DEL SOL or is used like jazz instrument - copied closely from ROBERT WYATT. Short songs are because of the MINUTEMEN.

What a lineup. So many amazing artists involved in this compilation, and all for a mighty cause too. On my first play through, so can’t name a favourite yet, but you know your can’t go wrong with Salvation Bill and BE GOOD.
